Mobile Maintenance Final Update, Homer City Negotiations to Begin, Western District Picnic and IBEW Motorcycle Ride

Thursday, June 28, 2018
After 40 plus years, the workforce created by Penelec to maintain and provide a larger and mobile workforce during power plant maintenance outages to 13 Penelec owned (at the time) or operated generating stations, has come to an end. After multiple sales and shut downs, what is left is less than a handful of generating stations still operating.
After NRG's decision to end the mobile maintenance group and lay off all members, Local 459 and a new company, Plant Service Group (PSG) worked together to come to an agreement to continue the mobile maintenance concept and provide employment to displaced members. In February 2018, a labor agreement was reached with PSG and ratified by the members. With commitments of projects from the plants, during the transition some members did not miss one day of pay.
I would like to thank all involved particularly Local 459 Sr. Business Rep. Ron Itell, Business Rep. Rick Ackley and Rick Keiper for their time, effort and insight it took to make it happen. However, the PSG and Local 459 endeavor was short lived. After a few months, it was realized that it may be better overall if PSG became part of the building trades and Local 459 Members would become Journeymen within a specific trade union, like the Millwrights, Pipefitters, Boilermakers, etc. This would allow PSG to fluctuate with a trained workforce from the Union Hall of the trades as project manpower needs determined.
On June 24, 2018, Mobile Maintenance's long history with Local 459 ended with members moving to the trades. I wish everyone the best of luck and a successful future. Thanks to PSG management for recognizing such a talented and diverse group of employees/members and moving forward.
Homer City Negotiations

NRG management at the Homer City Generating Station has communicated to the Union their desire to begin negotiations. The current agreement will expire on September 30, 2018. A negotiating committee from the bargaining unit at the plant has been appointed and a survey has been mailed to all members home address for input. If any member from the Homer City plant does not receive a survey in the mail, please call the Hall to verify your current mailing address.
On the survey, I am requesting a personal e-mail address to directly communicate any updates as needed. The first meeting with management has been scheduled for July 12, 2018.
As the members are very aware of, we have reason to believe this round of negotiations could be the most difficult the Homer City bargaining unit has experienced at the station. We must be prepared for a fight, be strong, united and support our bargaining unit negotiating committee. Remember:
United we bargain and divided we beg!
